Prof. J S Babu Rao & Advocate Mallikarjuna Rao and all their associates as a panel have swept the polls conducted at the AGM held on 17-6-2012 defeating CB Richard & K Sarada and their followers. It was an unprecedented turn out at the AGM this year despite rain and humidity. Started at 3 pm, the poll process went on upto 8.30 pm.

The outgoing Managing Committee proposed meaningless amendments to the bye-laws much to the disappointment of Senior Citizens, Members serving in Govt Departments & Women who are active in other Associations etc. Those proposed amendments were not authorized by the Executive Committee, either. The lesson to be learnt is "Never disrespect senior citizens and elders".

SR Nagar, the longest busbay of Hyderabad

Kaveri travels multi-axled Volvo bus was caught in fire on the Ameerpet main road on the night of Sunday (10-6-2012). After noticing the smoke, passengers jumped out of the the bus and fled. Flames spread to the entire bus and even before the arrival of fire tenders the bus was completely destroyed. The incident took place when the bus belonging to Kaveri Tours and Travels, was going towards Central Bus Station at Gowliguda from BHEL.

Five fire tenders from Film Nagar, Sanathnagar, Secunderabad, Gowliguda and Langar Houz, besides a snorkel, rushed to the spot to extinguish the flames. Police confirmed that there were no casualties in the incident. The apparent cause is sparks in the battery chambers near the luggage boot of the bus. Another version is the bus was parked on a heap of ash that was gathered from a computer shop of a building that caught fire in the afternoon, the same day.

The Bombay highway that passes between SR Nagar and Vengal Rao Nagar has become the longest busbay of Hyderabad city causing pollution and posing threat to life.

Confusion clouds over amendments

The Executive Committee of the Association met on 9th June 2012 in  a state of utter confusion over the amendments to the byelaws of the Association. With just one week left for the AGM, nothing is clear. Due to irrational amendments proposed to be adopted, majority of the members got irritated mainly for the reasons namely-

(1) down-sizing the number of vacancies to the position of the Vice Presidents and the Joint Secretaries, but increasing the strength of Joint Treasurers 

(2) unprecedented and prohibitive imposition of cash deposit for each and every nomination &

(3) restricting the entry of Senior Citizens, those working for Govt and local bodies, representatives of women associations etc into the Managing Committee of the Association.

Criticism is that these proposed amendments were never discussed and adopted in any of the earlier EC meetings, but proposed unilaterally, without even consulting the seniors.

The meeting witnessed chaos and disorder when members left the meeting, disgusted, abruptly.

Sanjeeva Reddy Nagar, Today

Sanjeeva Reddy Nagar, shortly SR Nagar is supposed to be a residential suburb in Hyderabad City, in the State of Andhra Pradesh, India. Very close to Ameerpet, a commercial area, it is named after the 6th President of India, Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy. Towards the west of Bombay highway lies Vengal Rao Nagar, another residential suburb named after a Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. Geographically, SR Nagar is within the core city of Hyderabad.

SR Nagar was developed and built into Special Type, A type, B type, C type, MIG, LIG & Weaker Sections Housing structure by AP Housing Board from 1968 onwards. Once with a good number of trees and good environment, now it looks like a concrete jungle. It has Begumpet, Greater Leela Nagar and Dharamkaran Road to its East. Vengal Rao Nagar and Srinivasa Colony to its West. Bahlool Khan Guda, Subash Nagar and Sanathnagar to its North and Ameerpet to its South. The statue of Umesh Chandra, a police officer who was shot dead by Naxalites is at the main entrance of this Colony and  has become a landmark to reach.

SR Nagar hosts a number of educational institutions, hostels, eateries, private hospitals and other commercial establishments. The main road from Umesh Chandra Statue to SR Nagar Police Station is lined up with Banks and Financial Institutions. Real estate boom that caught up a 20 years ago resulted in converting all the original Housing Board structures into multi-storied apartments. Except a Community Hall (which is in a dilapidated condition), a Mahila Samajam, a children park and a municipal play ground there is not much breathing space with all lanes and by-lanes having been encroached and shrunk. BK Guda park is a relief.

Sanjeeva Reddy Nagar has many Corporate Schools and Junior colleges and coaching centers namely, Bhashyam, Nagarjuna, Sri Chaitanya, Kakatiya, Narayana, Gautami, Gowtham, Narayana. At a shouting distance, there are hundreds of IT coaching centers in and around Aditya enclave, Ameerpet.

More than 300 private buses bound for almost all the cities and towns within the State and neighbouring States originate and terminate at this place.

It falls into Sanathnagar Assembly segment within Secunderabad Parliamentary constituency.

This colony has a representative body of Civil Society by name "Sanjeeva Reddy Nagar Welfare Association" with its office located on the first floor of SR Nagar Community Hall. Its Office bearers and representatives are elected  once in two years. Especially, since the year 2000, the Association has done a lot to improve the infrastructure and civic amenities in the colony.

Writ Petition 19835 of 2002 disposed in 2008

WP No.19835 of 2002 between the petitioner Sanjeeva Reddy Nagar Welfare Association and the respondent AP Housing Board is disposed by an order dated 28th August 2008.

The writ was filed by the Association questioning the proposed action of the Housing Board in auctioning the Community Hall to private people on rental basis for a period of 5 years on the ground that "community hall was constructed for the benefit of the residents of SR Nagar as when the layout has been made, the Housing Board collected developmental charges for providing civic amenities like roads, play grounds, water, drainage, electricity etc and also to develop the said community hall to meet the needs of the colony people".

While disposing the writ Hon'ble Justice V Eswaraiah, AP observed that "it is just and proper to settle the terms and conditions for making use of the said community hall even by the auction purchaser and for that reason, it is just and proper for the respondent Housing Board to give notice to the petitioner Association before issuing auction notification.  Accordingly, the writ petition is disposed of keeping it open for the respondents to auction the community hall on rental basis.  However, the respondents are directed to issue notice to the petitioner before issuing auction notification and take its suggestion also into account". 

The Housing Board took 2 years to communicate the order of the High Court.  Now the EE, North Division of APHB vide his letter dtd 20-7-2010 asking for the suggestions of the Association.

Record Notes of discussion: (1) Smt K V S Swarajya Lakshmi, a Life Member of the Association suggested that the main road of SR Nagar Colony from Umesh Chandra statue to Police Station may be named after her father late Dr Tirumala Rao, a popular freedom fighter. AGM is of the opinion that necessary recommendation may be made to GHMC in this regard. (2) Sri Sreerama Murthy, a Life Member of the Association suggested that the list of life members may be circulated to all the members of the Association. Noted for action. (3) Sri V Anjaneyulu, Past President of the Association that just before the elections, the names of candidates who have filed nominations for the posts of office bearers may be circulated to all the members. This has been noted for future guidance.

Sri P Narender Reddy, a Life Member of the Association who has been appointed as Returning/Election Officer conducted the elections. Where-ever there is a contest, he organized secret ballot as decided by the AGM and finally declared the following as elected. All the 12 EC members were elected in the AGM.

Sri B Sree Rama Chandra Murthy, Vice President-I suggested that we may take up with the concerned authority for laying speed breakers at identified places in the colony.

Sri G Sridhar, Vice President-II informed that one of his Acquaintances is an Auditor and he will pursue with him, in case the Association needs its accounts to be audited.

Sri P Shankar, EC Member suggested that growing disturbance due to Hostels might be found with a solution.

President informed the AGM that all the important issues have been reduced into a Memorandum for presenting to Hon’ble MLA, Sanath Nagar.

Special Event

Hon’ble Sri M Shashidhar Reddy, MLA, Sanath Nagar & Member, National Disaster Management Authority, Govt of India upon invitation to be the distinguished guest at the AGM, has consented and attended the General Body meeting. For his successful re-election to the Legislature from Sanathnagar Assembly Constituency the Association felicitated him and presented with a Memorandum consisting of the following requests while thanking for all that he has done to SR Nagar.

1. Renovation of Community Hall with all facilities and handing it over to a committee comprising the representatives of APHB and SR Nagar Welfare Association in accordance with the provisions of APHB Act.

2. Reconstruction of Ameerpet Govt Hospital in SR Nagar

3. Conversion of Playground near Metro Water Sump into Children’s Indoor Games stadium with walkers’ path around

4. Clearing of encroachments and vendors on footpath along the widened Balkampet road from Sonabayamma Temple to Yellamma Temple. Similarly from Srinivasa Colony Bus stop to Yellamma Temple via Nagarjuna College, Community Hall and Balaji Temple to ease the traffic on the main roads.

5. Upgradation of SR Nagar Library

6. Removal of unauthorized vendors around the community hall in the hawker free zone and making it a parking lot. Similarly on the main road from Umesh Chandra statue to SR Nagar PS.

7. Removal of Car Rentals/Used Car Sales from SR Nagar Colony

8. Regulation of traffic during peak hours by employing traffic police at Andhra Bank, Community Hall & SR Nagar PS

9. Provision of High mast lights and raising of footpaths in the entire colony including the private colonies adjoining SR Nagar

10. Pre-monsoon clearing of drains in SR Nagar

11. Early completion of laying water supply pipelines

12. Recarpeting of the widened portion of the main road

13. Provision of electric crematorium in SR Nagar burial ground

Members of the Association and Special Invitees from SR Nagar and adjoining colonies have requested the Hon’ble MLA for the following

1. More number of buses to ply through SR Nagar

2. Up keeping the Community hall till renovation and reconstruction is made

3. Controlling the irregular growth of the colony etc

Hon’ble MLA while replying to the appeals assured that meetings with officials would be convened wherever necessary. He informed that he is planning to create a “brain-trust” with senior citizens of various professions for the colonies in his constituency and desired that details of such persons may be given to him. He further informed that he is getting a website designed and hosted for the constituency which will be more interactive and capable of monitoring various developmental works and suggested that future communication with him through emails could be effective and saves time and energy.
